My Favourite Homemade Almond Milk + Step By Step Photos — Oh She Glows. I first tried making homemade almond milk a couple years ago, after many of you told me so many amazing things about it. It’s better than store bought! Homemade almond milk is the best! My first couple tries didn’t exactly knock it out of the park. Homemade Flea Prevention Dog Treats Two words come to mind: hot mess! I used a cheesecloth and things didn’t go very smoothly, if you catch my drift. I’m sure some of you have a lot more finesse with a cheesecloth, but I did not seem to be one of those people. This time, I finally took the plunge and purchased a nut milk bag (feel free to giggle). Also called sprouting bags, these mesh straining bags make homemade nut and seed milks (among other things) a total breeze. I cannot wait to explore its many uses. This time around, my almond milk making process was indeed a breeze. Here are some step by step photos to show you my process. You should also know that every time I type “step by step” NKOTB starts playing in my head. Portion out the chicken and rice dog food recipe into serving sizes that make sense for your household. We are going to soak a cup of raw almonds overnight or for 8 hours or longer. Sometimes if I’m in a time crunch I just soak them for 1 hour or so and it still turns out fine. Rinse and drain the almonds and pop them into your blender along with 3- 4 cups of filtered water (I like 3. Which nuts do you think your body would rather digest – the dry, hard as a rock nuts or the plump, juicy nuts? Sorry, that sounded all weird and awkward. My favourite flavour combo is a whole vanilla bean, a couple Medjool dates, cinnamon, and a pinch of sea salt. It’s intensely vanilla flavoured with notes of caramel and cinnamon. The secret to an intense vanilla flavour is blending an entire vanilla bean. Just chop it up and toss the whole bean into the blender. You’ll be left with some amazing vanilla almond milk. Of course you can always use vanilla extract or liquid sweeteners too. If using the dates and/or vanilla bean, add them along with the almonds and water. You are here: Home / Shoots / Ben / Recipe for Low-Phosphorus Dog Food ~ Caring for a Dog with Chronic Renal Failure. If you simply want to add a liquid sweetener or vanilla extract, you can add them now or at the end. Your call. Blend for 1 minute on the highest speed. Let’s go TURBO mode!!!! Thank you Eric for moonlighting as a hand model once again. A lot of the milk will filter right through the bag without any effort. But to get all of the milk out, you’ll need to do some gentle squeezing to encourage the milk through. This process took me a few minutes. As you can see in the photo on the right, I was left with about 1 cup of almond pulp. I rinsed the blender out quickly and poured the milk back into the blender. I do this because I find it easier to pour the milk from the blender into the jar rather than from a large bowl into the jar. If you have a wide mouth funnel feel free to use that. Check out those tiny specks of vanilla! I blended in a bit of cinnamon and a pinch of fine grain sea salt for even more flavour enhancing. Tell me, what’s better than Vanilla Cinnamon Caramel flavour? Nothing. You can use the almond pulp for all kinds of things like oatmeal, hummus, homemade granola, smoothies, cookie or muffin batter, crackers, or you can even dehydrate it and then blend it up to make almond meal. Oh, and you can freeze it too. Man oh man, it tasted so lovely straight from the blender. I can assure you, it gets even better as it chills in the fridge. I’ve never been a big milk drinker, but this almond milk had me going back to the fridge again and again and again for little sips. I can’t promise I’m organized enough to make this on a regular basis, but it’s a fun option to have up my sleeve when I’m feeling motivated or just want a special treat. Yield. 3 1/2 cups. Prep Time. 10 Minutes. Cook time. 0 Minutes. Total Time. 10 Minutes. Ingredients: 1 cup raw almonds, soaked. Medjool dates, to taste*1 whole vanilla bean, chopped or 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract*1/4 teaspoon cinnamon. Small pinch fine sea salt. Directions: Place almonds in a bowl and cover with a couple inches of water. Soak the almonds in water overnight (about 8 to 1. For a quick- soak method, soak the almonds in boiled water for 1 hour. Rinse and drain well. Place drained almonds into a blender along with the filtered water, pitted dates, and chopped vanilla bean. Blend on the highest speed for 1 minute. Place a nut milk bag over a large bowl and slowly pour the almond milk mixture into the bag. Gently squeeze the bottom of the bag to release the milk. This process can take a few minutes so be patient! Rinse out blender and pour the milk back in. Whisk in the cinnamon and sea salt. Using a funnel, pour into a large glass jar and secure lid. Store in the fridge for up to 3 to 4 days. I recommend storing in the coldest spot in the fridge (typically the back) rather than on a door. Shake the jar very well before drinking as the mixture separates when sitting. You might be wondering – If I don’t have a nut milk bag can I use a fine mesh sieve? I did a trial using my sieve. I didn’t find the milk got as smooth compared to using a nut milk bag, but if you strain it several times, it comes out decent. Also, feel free to try a cheesecloth, but I’m definitely not the person to give you advice using that method. What about the cost? Homemade almond milk can be cheaper than store bought or it can be more expensive; it really depends on your ingredients. When I see bulk almonds on sale, I like to stock up and buy a big bag. Pop a bag in the freezer to ensure they stay fresh. To avoid almonds sprayed with the chemical propylene oxide, please see this article and this handy guide to common brands that do and do not use the chemical. If you are concerned about propylene oxide on your almonds be sure to check with your almond retailer to see what sterilization method is used. Have you ever made homemade almond milk before? Real- Life Health and Weight Loss. Note: This post has been edited since publishing, and I apologize that I had to slap unsightly watermarks over most of the before and after photos. I didn’t want that to be something I stressed about day in and day out. I grew up with Paige, and vividly remembered her infectious smile. I’m going to share a few of the most important things I’ve learned along the way, in hopes of inspiring someone else out there. Be aware of portion sizes and know exactly what you’re putting into your body. I always have and always will. I just posted a new post HERE on my TransformingHollie blog! Please follow me over there! It is my goal to start doing weekly updates! We serve everyone regardless of race, color, ethnic or religious background, national origin, citizenship, age, height, weight, disability, marital status. Hollie's Weight Loss Blog. This blog is a duplicate from the one on Transforming. Hollie. com. If you're not already following me over there, please do! As promised in my last post, I wanted to communicate WHY exactly I decided to sign on as a coach for Beachbody. It wasn't an impulse decision, but one that I've actually been pondering for quite a while. If you've been reading my blog for a while, you know that I have absolutely no reservations about using products on this journey. Whenever I read someone who likes to brag about not using . One thing I've learned after many years on this journey is that the products or method you use only works if you do the work. So use whatever tools you want! You're only wasting your own hard earned money if you're not willing to do your part. I just want me and everyone else to be successful. What ever it takes. Back to Beachbody. My love affair with Beachbody started in 2. I ordered Slim in Six and completed the entire six week program. This was pre- blogging days, btw. I was captivated by the infomercial and decided to go for it. Until the six weeks were up and I started binge- eating like crazy and gained all the weight back. This was WAY before I had accepted or even KNEW what food addiction was and that I had it. Fast forward several years. To the days of social media. I started following someone's blog (Yum Yucky) and then someone else on IG (Erika at Messy. Mom. Hustle) that were both beach body coaches. Both had an amazing transformations. Erika and her hubby would do these at- home workouts together and it looked like so much fun! I also knew Tara from the blog world (wortheveryounce). And then I started following another person, and then another, and another and they all used Beachbody products. Someone even sent me a sample of Shakeology once. I thought it was SO nasty because it wan't sweet enough (now I'm rolling my eyes at myself). But even though I saw the personal success (each of them!), the transformations AND the fact that they all had thriving businesses, I always looked at them and didn't believe I could actually pull that off. So I continued to follow all of them on social media. And even several more! And I could see the continued personal results. But I could also see other things. One person I follow QUIT HER JOB and offers Beachbody full time. Another person, a stay at home mom, was just able to buy a new home because she had earned so much with her business they paid off all their debt. I continuously saw weight loss and maintenance. I always saw success. But what I didn't see is them SELLING anything at all. Their posts never looked like an infomercial for a product. It sincerely looked like these people were happy with their Shakeology and home workouts and sincerely wanted to help people with their own transformation. About a year ago (when I started this blog as opposed to Skinny. Hollie), I decided that I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I felt like it was one of those things that had been calling me for a while, but fear just told me was unattainable. Inspiring weight loss stories of men and women from the UK and around the world. These 'Super Slimmers' share how they have successfully turned their lives around. Since starting my weight loss journey one month ago, I. My weight loss seems to have slowed down just a bit, which is to be expected when. Awesome, awesome, awesome!! I could see myself working from home. I could see myself spending more time with my children and family. And honestly, more time at the beach! After starting my teaching assignment here in Florida, I knew I was burnt out. I needed a change. I wanted to work at home. I signed up with Mary Kay in October and knew after a few months that wasn't it. Diet is everything when it comes to weight maintenance and weight loss, says Jones.I LOVE makeup, but it wasn't my passion. What IS my passion? I asked myself that a million times. And as I stated in my last blog post, at some point after finding success with Keto this year, and becoming more active on social media, and actually trying to teach and HELP people with the knowledge I'd acquired.. It's helping people become the best, most healthy version of themselves. It's allowing people to use me as a source of inspiration and motivation and accountability! Through helping others, I help myself. It fills me in a way that I've never been filled before. While typing this I just got an amazing text from someone I've met on social media (through my Like page) and that is also now doing keto. She has already lost a lot of weight and inches! It's such great news and I just had to smile from ear to ear. I was an example for her. And now she is getting healthy and leading her family by example. Yes, she is doing the hard work. But I feel so happy inside getting to watch her transformation!!! A month or so ago, the whole stay- at- home- wife- and- entrepreneur- mom thing started rolling through my brain again. It's summer, and instead of staying home with my kids, I went out and got a summer job. Yes, it was easy and fun and the pay was great. But I missed the summer with my kids. I only have two kids left at home. And they are turning into mini adults. Time is flying. And it got me thinking.. What happened to my dreams? My plans of being a work from home mom? What could I do that would allow me to do something I'm passionate about AND make enough money that I could accomplishing that goal? One morning a few weeks ago as I was pondering this on my way to work, I ran across a podcast by Chalene Johnson. If you don't know who she is, then shame on you. But she is the instructor on several Beachbody programs (Turbo. Jam, Piyo..). I had subscribed to her podcast back in May (I think) because she had someone on her show talking about a low carb, high fat diet and lifestyle. So on this day, I was searching for something to listen to on my long ride to work and came across one of her shows on personal branding that REALLY got me thinking. The answer was in my face this whole time. It's a reputable company. EVERYONE knows about their products (duh, infomercials!) They are a leader in health and wellness. It's a brand I already trusted. I came home that evening and started following Chalene. Then I started going back and stalking everyone I follow on social media that's affiliated with Beachbody. I contacted my own Beachbody coach and started hammering her with questions. Her response.. You just haven't made it official. After we moved, I knew I'd have space to workout at home and thought Pi. Yo would be a good way to start. But it was more challenging than I expected. I did the first three days and it started collecting dust. BUT, I was ready to give it another try. After the first or second workout, Chalene started talking about Shakeology after a workout segment. Since going keto, I've been plagued by chronic constipation and hair loss. The reviews stated that Shakeology helped with BOTH. Definitely higher in carbs than I would have liked, but it actually looked like a good meal replacement. I could pronounce all the ingredients and it was (in my opinion) clean! So I ordered a sample pack. So quietly, I tried it for a week. I only told a few people because LORD HAVE MERCY I didn't want the negativity. I adjusted my carbs (eliminating most of my dairy and my daily servings of pecans) so I could still keep my carbs around 2. And within TWO days I was having daily bowel movements. AND my hair stopped shedding. Now, my hair had already decreased shedding significantly, but while drinking Shakeology it STOPPED. And it wasn't a fluke. Because after being OFF Shakeology for three days I'm already back to not having BM's at all. The Shakeo didn't make me bloat or have cravings. I was still able to maintain ketosis. And so did I. So, after all the research on the company. And being a guinea pig for the product. And actually doing one of the workout programs and seeing progress, and being excited about doing a few more (Cize!) I was ready to pull the trigger. But I was still scared. Until on Saturday morning and I logged on to Instagram and saw this picture. This picture is 2. Broadway downtown. I went to high school on Broadway. I know that area well. And to see THIS MANY PEOPLE working out, changing their lives, and so committed to a company.. This is where I'm supposed to be. It will be with the help of this company that I get to earn a living doing what I love to do. And it will also be through this company that I will finally realize my own weight loss and fitness goals. With the combination of my own knowledge of the ketogenic and low carb diets, and with the training and resources that Beachbody provides on clean eating and portion control, I can help SO many people. And I can also participate in and offer fitness programs to fit ANYONE's style and needs. Fitness that can be done from the comfort of your own home (no more driving to the gym or packing a workout bag). Someone commented on my last post that she hopes I don't turn my blog into just posts about product sales. Never will. What you will continue to see is my progress. More about my eating plan. And if you see something that interests you, you can contact me! I'm not a sales person and don't want to be one. But I will help you reach your goals. With or without you purchasing products from me. Because that's what I do. It's what I believe God put me here for. All the starts and stops. All the struggle with gaining and losing weight. All the damage I've done to my body. I see now that it was all part of a bigger plan. I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be. And now I'm doing what I'm supposed to do. My story, my testimony, will help others. I want us all to transform. DAMY Member Weight Loss Testimonials. Stop wasting time and money jumping from fad to fad. I feel it is extremely important to try to put words to the fact that my physical transformation is sincerely only 4. What you can. I have an abundance of energy from the time I wake up in the morning to the time I decide to go to bed. I am actually physically on an athletic level (I never played a sport and barely moved in my younger years). I feel younger, my hair is thicker, my skin is glowing, I wake up excited for every day and have a passion for life that is intangible. This is why I am so passionate about my program! I know what this program can do for you and want to share it with the world! I am no different that you. YOU are able to do the same! Feel better within days and see results within a couple weeks. Make the decision and commitment to yourself and get started today! I had been active my whole life, recently ran a half marathon and was very happy with my conditioning. Despite all this I could not for the life of me lose the 1. I wanted to drop to get the cut look I was dying for! I generally followed the clean eating rule of thumb and overall had what I considered a healthy lifestyle. I had been following Amy on Facebook and really liked the recipes and ideas she was posting. I sent Amy a message stating the above and asking what she recommended. I signed up for the Bikini Body Program that weekend and the next 1. The weight starting dropping off (1. I felt more energized and my grocery bill dropped significantly (I was eating clean before but I was eating huge portion sizes!). I am ecstatic with the change I have seen in my physique as well as my energy levels. It has really made me realize how important it is to maintain a good balance of exercise AND proper eating.”– J (Bikini Body Program Member)Emily’s Bikini Body Program Success Story – “The thing I love most about DAMY is that you don’t have to count calories!” What weight loss results did you achieve on your DAMY Program? Although I did not have a significant amount of weight to lose, I had plenty of room for tightening and toning. In the first two weeks I lost 5 lbs. After the initial drop in weight, my number plateaued, but I continued to notice changes in body composition. I was looking longer, leaner and more defined each week. I couldn’t believe the difference in my before and after pictures! Other than weight loss, how else has DAMY helped you? I dreaded taking my initial pictures for the program. A back surgery sidelined me from exercising for four months. Prior to that I was in the best shape of my life (until now). I had found damyhealth prior to my surgery but knew that I would not be able to complete the exercise regimen during my recovery. Looking back, I wish I had joined for the nutritional aspect because diet is so important to health maintenance. Before surgery, I was exercising regularly and was eating many of the same foods on plan, but was eating them at the wrong time of the day which stalled my results. After surgery, I was not eating healthy and was not able to exercise. I was not happy with the way I looked and wanted to get back into shape. When I first started the program, I found that it was easy for me to adjust to the nutritional program since I was eating healthy before surgery. I loved experimenting with the recipes and am still amazed at how creative and delicious many of them are. The workouts were challenging enough so that I was able to complete them, but still felt as though I was being pushed. I am still amazed at how much my body changed and how much I accomplished in three short months on the Bikini Body Program. I feel so much better about myself and how I look. I love to see peoples’ reactions when I show them my before and after photos. It really is remarkable how Amy has fine tuned her program to suit the needs of so many different people. What do you love about DAMY? The thing I love most about DAMY is that you don’t have to count calories. I was driving myself crazy day in and day out logging caloric intake and burn. There were days where I would eat even if I was not hungry because I had not taken in enough calories. DAMY alleviates that stress and lets you focus on eating clean, healthy food without the guilt. The recipe variation is good and the desserts are simply amazing! The hardest part for me was choosing which treat to have each week! Amy is very motivational. I wanted to try her program after reading her own success story. You can see from her testimonial that she has walked in the shoes of women like myself. She knows how much hard work and dedication it takes to transform your lifestyle. Amy was always supportive and non- judgmental, even when I had an extra treat! I combined clean eating with my high intensity workout regimen and the inches just start to melt away! I am still 1. 54 pounds, but now I! For the first time in my life I feel like a woman should! I still have curves but I! I can actually see them! My butt is firming up and my arms are sculpted! People at the gym notice how hard I train and compliment me for motivating them to push harder, even some of the men! For the first time in my life, I am excited to go shopping! I look in the mirror every morning and say wow! She provides such motivation and inspiration! She believes in each and every one of us and knows that we have the inner courage, strength and will to succeed! Life can be negative and full of obstruction, but if Amy has taught me anything, it is that you can always find the light in the darkness! She taught me to achieve excellence in everything you do in life, pursue every challenge and overcome any obstacle with courage, zeal, and an unwavering spirit! Clean eating is my lifestyle and hard core training is what makes me happy! I feel sexy, feminine, fiery and unstoppable! Amy always said! Everyday I say, today is going to be a good day! I have a new life and I have surrounded myself with the right people! Thank you for being a friend, a coach, a confidant, and a true inspiration! You are a beautiful person inside and out and words can not express my gratitude for having you in my life! Thank you Thank you! Love ya!,Kimi. Sarah’s Success Story – “I kept seeing results even without working out!”I first found out about the DAMY Programs from two friends of mine from the gym (Kimi and Nikki – both of whom you have seen in their awesome transformations on the site!). They are always researching great webistes, blogs and recipes online and came across Amy’s site and shared some amazing tips, recipes and tricks with me. They were raving about the results they were getting from the BBEC and I wanted in! After having tried other clean diets with some success, I was ready to take it to the next level. Coming to DAMY with a good understanding of clean eating, and with a very active lifestyle, I knew pretty well what I was getting into. I got my daily stress relief (and adrenaline fix!) from high intensity workouts like bootcamps, spinning, sprints, and weight training 5- 6 times per week. I felt I had a pretty good start to the program and was already noticing my clothes fitting better after just a few weeks! Then a crazy thing happened. I am sure you are thinking the same thing I was- how could a healthy, young, non- smoker (who is not on any medications) have a stroke? Well, it actually happened at the gym (and apparently it is not super uncommon in young, healthy individuals who are very physically active- so I found). I was REALLY lucky in that I did not have any side effects like paralysis or weakness on either side, and I thank God that I am ok. The only thing that happened was I had some funny blurriness in my vision once in a while, and I had severe headaches. Once the diagnosis came, I was ordered out of the gym for 3 months. I was pretty bummed about that one especially because I had finally plucked up the courage to try a fitness competition in April with my two pals Kimi and Nikki. But, health comes first and so I diligently (yet begrudgingly at first) obeyed. My first thought was, “OMG I am going to blow up like a balloon if I can’t workout!” But then I remembered something that I have heard from Amy and several other trainers. Well people, it is so true. I kept seeing results even without working out! When I first started, the numbers were not really changing on the scale so much. I did have to go out and buy new jeans and pants though. I have lost a total of 1. Bikini Body Program, but some of it has definitely been due to the fact that I have not been able to workout. This program has really guided me to adopt this “plan” to become my lifestyle. Have you ever heard anyone say, “if you do something enough times, it becomes habit?” That is certainly what the Bikini Body Program has helped me with. I don’t really miss anything. I have become more creative with cooking and have been able to make substitutes for most of my favorite foods! And sure, going out for drinks or out to a party means I might have to plan a little in advance, but I know that it is not worth having something that is bad for me if it means I cannot fit into all my new clothes! There are so many things about this program that are so amazing! The blogs, the daily motivation, the yummy recipes, the testimonials, the emails, and of course, the accountability. Amy has been the most supportive, kind, caring and compassionate cheerleader to me even just through emails. I feel like she has a personal investment in me and she really does care. I know it is her job to care, but she does it with passion and conviction which cannot be forced. She has helped me to be more kind and patient with myself through this difficult time, and it has truly meant so much to me. I really hope that this testimonial might help some of you out there who cannot workout as rigorously or frequently, or if you might be discouraged for any reason. Top 5 diets for weight loss in 2. Sticking with your weight- loss resolutions this New Year may be a little easier if you choose a diet that best fits your lifestyle. U. S. News and World Report is out with its annual list of the best diet options. The magazine consulted with a panel of health experts and ranked 3. Here's U. S. News' ranking of the top five diets for weight loss, when dropping pounds quickly and keeping them off are your primary goals: 1. This diet received 3. Weight Watchers' claim is that you can drop up to two pounds a week using their Points. Plus program and group support. This isn't about counting calories; the key to losing pounds on this diet is choosing nutritionally dense foods that have a healthy ratio of fiber, fat, protein and carbohydrates. Fresh fruits and vegetables are highly encouraged and carry zero points, so people can eat their fill of these foods. Candy bars and processed foods are higher in points and allowed in smaller portions. Experts like this diet's effectiveness over the long term. In an analysis of more than 6. Weight Watchers participants, researchers found that nearly 6. British Journal of Nutrition in 2. Another study showed that the more Weight Watchers dieters used the program's various support tools- - including meetings, a cellphone app and online tools - - the more weight they lost. The Health Management Resources program is more than just a diet, it's a lifestyle. The theory: reducing caloric intake and increasing physical activity and personal accountability will help people lose weight and keep it off. This program is divided into two phases. Phase One, the Quick Start phase, lasts about three weeks and is intended to jump- start weight loss with meal replacements including low- calorie shakes, meals, nutrition bars and multigrain hot cereal that the program delivers right to your door. Once reaching their goal weight, dieters move on to Phase Two. This is the maintenance phase in which a person begins to incorporate other healthy food options into their HMR meal replacements. Phase Two also focuses on more lifestyle changes and includes weekly telephone coaching sessions with dietitians and exercise physiologists. The biggest plus of this diet: convenience. HMR meal replacements save a lot of time at the supermarket. Based on a series of books and inspired by success stories from the popular television series, this diet introduces six weeks of healthy food and regular exercise to promote weight loss and help prevent disease. The basics: eat lots of fruits and veggies, choose lean protein sources over red meat, keep a food journal, and get some exercise. This diet doesn't ban any food groups and should be relatively easy to stick to long- term, say experts. And, unlike contestants on the TV show, you won't have to follow a grueling exercise regimen. People who choose this diet and lifestyle are encouraged to get at least two and a half hours of moderate- intensity activity a week (like walking or jogging), along with a couple of days of muscle- strengthening activities. Much like Weight Watchers, the Jenny Craig Diet claims devotees will drop up to two pounds each week by following a restricted calorie diet. Prepackaged meals limit calories, fat and portions and let you satisfy your sweet tooth without worrying about overindulging. This plan also includes weekly supportive counseling sessions to help members through their weight loss journeys right from the start. So, if you're a person that wants convenience and needs to be held accountable, Jenny Craig could be a good bet. One downside with prepackaged meals: dining out can be tricky. While Jenny allows for an occasional restaurant meal, dieters need to be aware of dining out tips and be able to self- regulate. This trendy diet attracts people who are looking to shed some pounds, improve their health and support the environment. This program relies heavily on fruits and veggies and completely eliminates any food that has been cooked, processed, microwaved, irradiated, genetically engineered or exposed to pesticides or herbicides. Experts say this plan nearly guarantees weight loss because most who follow it consume only half the calories they would eat on a diet that included cooked and processed foods. Downsides of this plan: it can be expensive, time consuming and limiting. To make a variety of raw food recipes, dieters are encouraged to purchases a juicer, dehydrator and a blender. Purchasing and preparing raw foods can take a lot of time and most restaurants don't offer many options for raw foodists. Custom Rotational Molding ~ Solar Plastics Inc. Johnson Drive. Delano, MN 5. Weight loss, weight loss before after, vegan, fitness, running, food blog — Oh She Glows. I hesitate to call this page my “Before and after” because I really don’t think there is an after. My journey to health is just that – a journey – and each year has its ups and downs and different challenges along the way. One thing I do know for sure is that I’m at a much better place than I used to be. From the age of 1. I struggled with an eating disorder until my mid- twenties. I would restrict my intake too low, over- exercise, and engage in binge eating. As a result, my weight – and mood – went up and down over the years. I had amenorrhea for a couple years because my body fat was too low to function. It’s a common misconception that you have to be deathly thin to have an eating disorder. If you saw me, you probably wouldn’t have thought that I was suffering as much as I was. Eating disorders come in all shapes and sizes and much of the grief is mental. After entering recovery and getting professional help, I’m now at a place where I don’t count calories or restrict my intake. I eat a plant- based diet that makes me feel amazing and I do activities that I enjoy, not to burn calories. I’ve experienced a huge shift in my perspective over the past 4 years and I finally love life again. I met Eric, my highschool sweetheart, when I moved to Ontario from New Brunswick with my mom. We started dating just a month after I began at my new school. Events in and around the Detroit metropolitan area from Hour Detroit magazine. It was puppy love that blossomed into a real, beautiful, can’t- be- without- each other– love. I always say the reason I moved to Ontario was to meet my soul- mate. My highest weight was 1. My eating disorder, something I had been struggling with since 1. Exam stress, living in a dorm, and new social opportunities led to late- night binges, alcohol, and unhealthy cafeteria food. I was trapped in a starve- binge cycle. I lost a bit of weight, but I was still struggling and going up and down on the scale. I went through lots of hair changes! I lost a lot of weight- but not in a healthy way- due to the stress of grad school and the demands that it brought. I dropped more weight and was really struggling on the inside. However, it ended on a great note- we got engaged in December 2. Mexico. 2. 00. 8: 2. I have ever experienced. I was stressed to the max and my weight kept dropping. I was juggling being a full- time Master’s student, writing a thesis, part- time teaching assistant, working at a new FT research job, and planning my wedding. I defended my thesis at the end of July 2. I looked happy on the outside, but was really struggling on the inside. Everyone told me I looked great, but they had no idea how I truly felt. The summer of 2. 00. I first dabbled with running. However, I did it mostly to burn calories and did not appreciate fitness for fun. Then I finally graduated, passed my oral defense, and got married. I had so much pressure lifted off my shoulders and we had such a great wedding and honeymoon. I finally got the courage to leave my job after being miserable for a year. We also moved out of the city to a town that was a better fit for our love of nature and peaceful surroundings. Things were starting to come together. I learned to have FUN with food and I fell in love with cooking! This is when my mindset about food started to shift. In 2. 00. 9, I started up my own business and started being good to my body again. I stopped obsessing about my body and weight. I worked out for fun and not to burn calories. I decided to ditch the scale and to go by how my clothes fit instead. It was the best thing I have ever done. I did things that made me feel happy. I also switched to a vegan diet after many years of experimenting on and off with a vegetarian diet. I felt amazing eating plant- based foods. After battling back from a pelvic injury from Jan- march, I ran my first race ever in June- a 1. This time not to burn calories, but to enjoy it. We also celebrated our first wedding anniversary! What a year it had been. I trained for my 3rd half marathon and my first try- a- triathlon (with Eric). These challenges keep me motivated to stay on a healthy path. I need lots of food for energy to keep up! I am learning to be good to myself a bit more each and every day. Eric also experienced many healthy changes. He went from a highest weight in university of 2. April 2. 01. 0). He has cut down his meat and dairy consumption by about 7. March 2. 01. 0. You can read about his changes and see his progress pictures here. As the years go by, I find myself getting stronger and more confident in who I am. I appreciate my body (most of the time, I’m not perfect though) and what it does for me each day. I try my best not to take my life for granted and worry about things that don’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. December 2. 01. 1: 2. Sorry for the poor picture quality, was taken on my phone!)The saying “life is a journey not a destination” really rings true for me as I update this post in 2. Unintentional Weight Loss and Appetite Stimulants. May/June 2. 01. 3Unintentional Weight Loss and Appetite Stimulants. By Mark D. Coggins, Pharm. D, CGP, FASCPToday’s Geriatric Medicine. Vol. 1. 0Unintentional weight loss, defined as a loss of 5% of body weight in one month or 1. Elderly patients with unintentional weight loss are at higher risk for infection, depression and death. The leading causes of involuntary weight loss are depression. Weight loss and fluctuations in weight have been associated with increased risks of death from cardiovascular disease and from all causes. Unexplained weight loss: Symptom It’s a predictor of mortality, with 9% to 3. In the frail elderly, even small amounts of weight loss can have negative consequences, and all elderly patients are encouraged to maintain their nutrition and weight over the years as even voluntary weight loss has been associated with increased risk of death and hip fracture. Complications of unintentional weight loss include anemia, decreased cognition and quality of life, edema, falls, hospitalizations, hip fractures, infections, nursing home placement, osteoporosis, and pressure ulcers. Common Causes of Unintended Weight Loss. Causes of unintentional weight loss can be divided into three main categories. Elderly patients experiencing weight loss should be screened for depression (eg, Geriatric Depression Scale), as the incidence of depression is high among these patients in both community and nursing home settings. There’s a possible link between rapid weight loss and the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, with one study finding that twice as many patients with Alzheimer’s disease experienced a weight loss of 5% or greater compared with the study’s control patients. Screening for Alzheimer’s disease or dementia in elderly patients with unintended weight loss using a tool such as the Mini- Mental State Exam or Clock Drawing Test may help with earlier identification earlier of the condition and allow for the consideration of available treatments, such as acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (eg, Aricept, Exelon) and/or memantine (Namenda), to potentially slow cognitive decline. Medication side effects (see Table 1 below) often contribute to weight loss because of side effects such as anorexia, dry mouth, taste or smell disturbances, swallowing difficulties, and nausea or vomiting. A retrospective chart review in a 7. Also, when health care providers had reviewed for possible causes of the weight loss, no changes in medication therapy had been attempted to evaluate the medications as an underlying cause. Instead, many of these patients were placed on additional medications in an attempt to stimulate appetite, contributing to the problem of polypharmacy. Managing Unintended Weight Loss. Currently there are no FDA- approved medications for appetite stimulation in the elderly. Most studies have failed to demonstrate that the medications commonly used off label to stimulate appetite also decrease morbidity and mortality or improve function or quality of life. As a result, appetite stimulants should not be considered as a first- line treatment for unintended weight loss in the elderly because of the lack of clear evidence of their benefit and the potential for significant medication- related side effects. Instead, nutritional intervention and the treatment of underlying conditions that contribute to weight loss are the keys to managing this condition. Failing to appropriately treat the underlying cause of the weight loss cannot be corrected with appetite stimulants. For example, appetite stimulant medications will do little to increase food intake if a patient’s underlying problem is poorly fitting dentures or inadequately treated depression or pain. Pharmacological Agents. Unexplained weight loss is the term used to describe a decrease in body weight that occurs unintentionally and can be a warning sign of diabetes. Opioid use disorder is a medical condition characterized by a problematic pattern of opioid use that causes clinically significant impairment or distress. Obesity is common, serious and costly. More than one-third of U.S. Adult Obesity Facts What are the latest statistics on. Only after nonpharmacological interventions have been attempted and found ineffective should appetite stimulants be considered, and even then, the use of these agents should occur only after their benefit- to- risk ratio has been carefully considered. Megesterol acetate is commonly used as an appetite stimulant and is FDA approved only for AIDS- associated weight loss. The branded product Megace ES has been heavily promoted in long term care for weight loss despite the lack of indication for this use in the elderly. In March, Par Pharmaceutical, the maker of Megace ES, settled a multimillion dollar federal and multistate lawsuit in which the company was accused of inappropriately marketing Megace ES for use in elderly nursing home patients. The lawsuit claimed Par marketed the product despite knowledge of megesterol acetate’s adverse side effects, including deep vein thrombosis, toxic reactions in elderly patients with impaired renal function, and mortality. Studies of megesterol acetate in elderly patients who experience weight loss are limited and of poor quality. Most show minimal or no weight gain, with no nutritional or clinically significant beneficial outcomes observed. Megesterol acetate use also has been associated with significantly increased mortality without significant weight gain. In some cases, a trial of megesterol acetate may be initiated but only after all other nonpharmacological interventions have been attempted and found to be ineffective. Evaluation of weight gain should occur at least every four weeks, and therapy should be discontinued if no benefit is achieved or adverse events are noted. Megesterol acetate should not be used for more than 1. The use of megesterol acetate in elderly patients with weight loss often is seen in those who have been hospitalized and then discharged to a nursing facility. These patients should be evaluated closely to ensure the use is appropriate. This practice in hospitals may indicate the need for increased education for dietitians and other health care professionals about the associated risk. The antidepressant mirtazapine (Remeron) has been used to help increase appetite and weight gain in depressed elderly patients. Studies involving the use of mirtazapine for weight gain in nondepressed elderly patients are lacking. With appropriate monitoring for side effects and weight gain, mirtazapine may be a drug of choice for elderly patients experiencing weight loss who also have coexisting depression. Additional Considerations. Weight loss with increasing age is believed to be due in part to decreased growth hormone production. The use of recombinant human growth hormone has been shown to help increase lean body weight, improve walking time, and increase serum albumin when elderly patients are given low doses (0. IU/kg) three times weekly for four weeks. However, its use should be limited due to evidence coming from small study sizes, its significant expense, and the potential risk of glucose intolerance, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, gynecomastia, edema, carpal tunnel syndrome, and arthralgia. The antihistamine cyproheptadine (Periactin) has been used to increase weight in various disease states. However, it has not been studied specifically for unintended weight loss in the elderly. Ultimately, it’s not recommended for use in older adults because of anticholinergic side effects, including dizziness, sedation, and dry mouth. Dronabinol (Marinol) has been shown to increase weight in a small placebo control study of Alzheimer’s patients,7 but its use is limited because of the risk of seizures, confusion, sleepiness, and euphoria. Multidisciplinary Approach to Weight Loss. Improved management of unintended weight loss in the elderly can best be achieved through an interdisciplinary approach. Physicians should work closely with other members of the care team to identify and treat the underlying causes contributing to weight loss. Dietitians are valuable resources in assessing food needs, recognizing changes in eating environment, and recommending nutritional supplementation, while social workers can identify socioeconomic factors (eg, living arrangements, financial concerns) contributing to unintended weight loss. Speech and occupational therapists can help assess swallowing and oral issues, while physical therapists can implement exercise programs to stimulate appetite and weight gain. Consult pharmacists to help identify medications that may contribute to weight loss and provide education on the appropriate use of appetite stimulant medications to limit unnecessary polypharmacy and medication- related adverse effects.— Mark D. Well berries contain a class of antioxidants called flavonoids, but it's the anthocyanins, specifically, that contribute their anti- inflammatory effects by effectively turning off inflammatory and immune genes. And when it comes to anthocyanins, blueberries are king. On top of that, blueberries are rich in vitamin C and another polyphenol, resveratrol, which have both been found to promote anti- inflammatory responses through decreasing inflammatory free radicals. Apple pie - Wikipedia. An apple pie is a fruit pie, in which the principal filling ingredient is apple. It is, on occasion, served with whipped cream or ice cream on top, or alongside cheddar cheese. The pastry is generally used top- and- bottom, making it a double- crust pie; the upper crust may be a circular or a pastry lattice woven of crosswise strips. Depending on the baker's preference, the bottom of the double- crust may be baked first (before baking the whole pie) to prevent the bottom from getting soggy. A survey showed that one out of five Americans (1. The more popular cooking apples include, Bramley, Empire, Northern Spy, Granny Smith, and Mc. Intosh. These different types of apples (canned, dries, fresh) affects the final texture and the length of cooking time required will vary, therefore people disagree. Dried or preserved apples were originally substituted only at times when fresh fruit was unavailable. Along with the apples people commonly use, cinnamon, salt, butter, and most importantly sugar. Alternatively, a piece of cheese (such as a sharp cheddar) is, at times, placed on top of or alongside a slice of the finished pie. An early Dutch cookbook from 1. Een notabel boecxken van cokeryen (. This early recipe was a simple one, requiring only a standard pie crust, slices of especially soft apples with their skin and seeds removed, and den selven deeghe daer die taerte af ghemaect es (roughly meaning . It was then baked in a typical Dutch oven. Once baked, the top crust (except at the edges) would be cut out from the middle, after which the apple slices were potentially put through a sieve before the pie was stirred with a wooden spoon. At this point the book recommends adding several spices to the pie, namely: cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, mace and powdered sugar. Finally, after mixing the ingredients into the pie with cream, it is once again put into the oven to dry. Both recipes are distinct in that they typically call for flavourings of cinnamon and lemon juice to be added and differ in texture, not taste. This crust is then filled with pieces or slices of apple, usually a crisp and mildly tart variety such as Goudreinet or Elstar. Cinnamon and sugar are generally mixed in with the apple filling. Atop the filling, strands of dough cover the pie in a lattice holding the filling in place but keeping it visible or cover the pie with crumbs. It can be eaten warm or cold, sometimes with a dash of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. The 1. 38. 1 recipe (see illustration at right) lists the ingredients as good apples, good spices, figs, raisins and pears. The cofyn of the recipe is a casing of pastry. Saffron is used for colouring the pie filling. In English- speaking countries, apple pie is a dessert of enduring popularity, whether it's eaten hot or cold, on its own or with ice cream, double cream, or custard. French style. French style apple pie is very different compared to the American version of the sweet dessert. Instead of it being right side up with crust on top and bottom, it actually is upside down, with the fruit being caramelized. This can be made not only with apples but other fruits or vegetables as well, for example, pears or tomatoes. Often, breadcrumbs are used (wholly or partially) instead of flour, and sometimes rolled oats. It is usually flavoured with cinnamon and served with vanilla custard or ice cream. There is also a very popular version called . The apple pie had to wait for the planting of European varieties, brought across the Atlantic, to become fruit- bearing apple trees, to be selected for their cooking qualities as there were no native apples except crabapples, which yield very small and sour fruit. Apple varieties are usually propagated by grafting, as clones, but in the New World, planting from seeds was more popular, which quickly led to the development of hundreds of new native varieties. Food and Feeding. Feeding captive Bearded Dragons is simple and straightforward. They are going to need a varied diet consisting of live prey. Crickets, mealworms, waxworms, and occasionally pink or fuzzy mice will be required. In addition, they need a variety of shredded greens and vegetables once or twice a week. Feed small crickets every day and add a small mealworm every two or three days and a wax worm once every couple of weeks. Small insects and small meals are best and there is the belief that large meals and feeding insects that are too large for the dragon can cause leg paralysis, choking, and even death. As they grow, they can be fed larger insects, larger amounts less often, and their intake of shredded greens and vegetables can be increased to three or four times a week. For all sizes of Bearded Dragons, insects and salads should be dusted with a vitamin/mineral supplement. Dust every third or fourth feeding for young dragons until they are up to three months old. Then reduce supplementation to once a month for older dragons. You can offer a varied diet with plenty of fresh greens, such as collards, kale, mustard greens, romaine lettuce, and finely chopped vegetables such as yellow squash, zucchini, sweet potato, and carrots. To simulate this in captivity, let water drip into a dish in the enclosure to stimulate drinking. You can set up a simple system with a plastic drinking cup that has a perforated bottom. This cup is set on top of the cage's screen top, fill it twice a week and let the water drip slowly into a shallow dish in the cage below. The dripping water stimulates the dragons to approach and to drink. This drip system helps keep the humidity low in the dragon's enclosure by allowing the water to drip into a small space of the cage. Housing. Bearded Dragons evolved in a hot, arid environment. Their captive enclosure should reflect this need. Glass terrariums can be wonderful enclosures for Bearded Dragons. A 2. 0- gallon long terrarium (1. As they grow, they will of course need larger enclosures. Adult Bearded Dragons will require at least a 6. Secure and sturdy screen tops are available for these glass terrariums and are usually easy to find at local pet stores. Custom built enclosures are also popular and can be built inexpensively in a variety of sizes. Remember: Bigger is better. Substrates are an important addition to the look of a naturalistic setup. There is a growing movement in herpetoculture for the establishment of creative and elaborate naturalistic vivaria for reptiles. The business of selling driftwood, moss, misting systems, colorful sand, and supplies is thriving. There is some concern about Bearded Dragons ingesting sand as they pounce on crickets that wander their enclosure. Although sand can provide a beautiful and realistic substrate, closely matching the red desert sands of Western Australia, many feel it should not be used with beardies in captivity, especially with juveniles. Some suggested substrates include walnut shells and corn cob, some also suggest tiles. Young dragons are easier kept on a paper towel substrate. It is easy to clean, inexpensive, and prevents the young dragons that are just . We do not support the use of newspaper and reptile . Cypress mulch or pine shavings are not good substrates because they can hold excess moisture and they can also cause problems if eaten. There is no doubt that the addition of driftwood, cork bark, stable rock piles, and other cage decorations is important in keeping captive dragons healthy and stimulated. These decorations will provide both basking areas and areas for dragons to hide, to rest, and to sleep. If you collect branches and other decorations from nature, be sure that they come from an area that is not sprayed with pesticides and that they are non- toxic. Temperature and Lighting requirements: Obviously, a reptile from a hot, sunny environment is going to require plenty of environmental heat in its enclosure. In nature, reptiles move between hot, sunny areas and cooler, shaded areas to regulate their body temperature, called thermoregulation. A Bearded Dragon's enclosure should provide them with the ability to act out this thermoregulatory behavior by having a hot end and a cooler end. Add a hot spot over one end to serve as the basking area and add some shelter at the other end so that a captive dragon can remove itself from the heat. This is the reason that 2. The basking spot should reach temperatures of 9. Use 1. 00 watt T- Rex UVB- Heat. The UVB is important and allows diurnal reptiles to produce Vitamin D3 which in turn allows them to properly absorb the calcium they need to form healthy bones and to have healthy, working muscles. In cooler areas or during winter months, you can add a heat source under the enclosure in the form of a reptile heat mat. The goal is to keep the entire enclosure in the 7. Reptiles being kept in a confined area as pets need to be protected from harmful micro- organisms and parasites. The reptile cage needs daily and weekly maintenance. Provide fresh food and water in clean dishes everyday. Check on a daily basis to make sure that the tank is clean. As with any reptile, feces should be removed as soon as they are discovered. This includes dishes and cage decor. All of the substrate should be changed every three to four months. Never clean with a phenol such as Pine Sol. Chlorine and alcohol based cleaners are tolerated much better, but need to be thoroughly rinsed. Behavior Bearded Dragons do fine when kept singly, but they are social and can be kept in groups in a large enough enclosure. If there is more than one male, you can expect some territorial aggressive behavior when they are in breeding mode. A group of one male and several females will have fewer problems. Once acclimated, Bearded Dragons will typically accept short periods of handling and even hand- feeding. Sit on the floor when handling your reptile pet, then in case the dragon jumps or falls, it will probably not receive any serious harm from the shorter distance. As with all reptile pets, anyone who handles the reptile should be sure to wash his or her hands after handling their pets. Reproduction. Bearded Dragons are some of the most prolific reptiles kept in captivity today. If kept healthy and in a clean, proper captive environment an adult pair of dragons will most likely begin breeding and producing viable eggs as they approach two years old. Sexing: Sexing very young Bearded Dragons is somewhat difficult, but determining sex in juveniles over the age of three months is relatively easy. By holding the dragon in the palm of your hand with its tail facing you, carefully fold the tail up over the back and examine the area just above (posterior to) the cloacal opening. In males, hemipenal bulges can be seen on each side of the tail. The bulging hemipenes will also be separated by an indentation in the center of the tail between the two hemipenes. The hemipenal bulges are absent in females and the viewer will see only a slightly raised mound in this region. Breeding: Breeding Bearded Dragons is relatively simple. All that is needed is an adult pair of dragons in good health, an enclosure large enough to allow for breeding activity, and a suitable place for the female to lay her eggs. Prior to breeding, a conditioning period is suggested. After feeding the dragons heavier than normal in the . Myocardial infarction - Wikipedia. Myocardial infarction (MI) or acute myocardial infarction (AMI), commonly known as a heart attack, occurs when blood flow stops to a part of the heart causing damage to the heart muscle. The most common symptom is chest pain or discomfort which may travel into the shoulder, arm, back, neck, or jaw. Often it is in the center or left side of the chest and lasts for more than a few minutes. The discomfort may occasionally feel like heartburn. Other symptoms may include shortness of breath, nausea, feeling faint, a cold sweat, or feeling tired. Chest pain due to ischemia (a lack of blood and hence oxygen supply) of the heart muscle is termed angina pectoris. Pain radiates most often to the left arm, but may also radiate to the lower jaw, neck, right arm, back, and upper abdomen. Levine's sign, in which a person localizes the chest pain by clenching their fists over their sternum, has classically been thought to be predictive of cardiac chest pain, although a prospective observational study showed it had a poor positive predictive value. Other symptoms include diaphoresis (an excessive form of sweating). These symptoms are likely induced by a massive surge of catecholamines from the sympathetic nervous system. Loss of consciousness (due to inadequate blood flow to the brain and cardiogenic shock) and sudden death (frequently due to the development of ventricular fibrillation) can occur in myocardial infarctions. Fatigue, sleep disturbances, and dyspnea have been reported as frequently occurring symptoms that may manifest as long as one month before the actual clinically manifested ischemic event. In women, chest pain may be less predictive of coronary ischemia than in men. Such silent myocardial infarctions represent between 2. In people with diabetes, differences in pain threshold, autonomic neuropathy, and psychological factors have been cited as possible explanations for the lack of symptoms. Shift work is also associated with a higher risk of MI. What is a low carb diet, really? When can a low carb diet be beneficial? Should everyone follow a low carb diet? The ICMS(ICPD-Kenya) is an integrated digital service designed for management of Continous Proffessional Development(CPD). Healthcare providers have the ability to. The asterisk(*) also indicates left ventricular hypertrophy. Acute myocardial infarction refers to two subtypes of acute coronary syndrome, namely non- ST- elevated and ST- elevated MIs, which are most frequently (but not always) a manifestation of coronary artery disease. When a severe enough plaque rupture occurs in the coronary arteries, it leads to MI (necrosis of downstream myocardium). A collagenscar forms in their place. Recent studies indicate that another form of cell death, apoptosis, also plays a role in the process of tissue damage following an MI. This myocardial scarring also puts the person at risk for potentially life- threatening abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) and may result in the formation of a ventricular aneurysm that can rupture with catastrophic consequences. The difference in conduction velocity between injured and uninjured tissue can trigger re- entry or a feedback loop that is believed to be the cause of many lethal arrhythmias. The most serious of these arrhythmias is ventricular fibrillation (V- Fib/VF), an extremely fast and chaotic heart rhythm that is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death. Another life- threatening arrhythmia is ventricular tachycardia (V- tach/VT), which can cause sudden cardiac death. VT usually results in rapid heart rates that prevent the heart from pumping blood effectively. Cardiac output and blood pressure may fall to dangerous levels, which can lead to further coronary ischemia and extension of the infarct. The device works by delivering an electrical shock to the person to depolarize a critical mass of the heart muscle, in effect . This therapy is time- dependent, and the odds of successful defibrillation decline rapidly after the onset of cardiopulmonary arrest. Elevated CRP blood levels, especially measured with high- sensitivity assays, can predict the risk of MI, as well as stroke and development of diabetes. Calcium deposits in the coronary arteries can be detected with CT scans. Several studies have shown that coronary calcium can provide predictive information beyond that of classical risk factors. It can be subclassified into anterior, posterior, inferior, lateral, or septal. Transmural infarcts extend through the whole thickness of the heart muscle and are usually a result of complete occlusion of the area's blood supply. The subendocardial area is particularly susceptible to ischemia. An MI is different from. It is also distinct from heart failure, in which the pumping action of the heart is impaired. However, an MI may lead to heart failure. Thallium may also be used to determine viability of tissue, distinguishing whether nonfunctional myocardium is actually dead or merely in a state of hibernation or of being stunned. Other noncatastrophic differentials include gastroesophageal reflux and Tietze's syndrome. People are often advised to keep a diet where less than 3. This may be part of regional cardiovascular disease prevention programs, or through the health impact assessment of regional and local plans and policies. Based on numerous studies in different groups (e. Treatment attempts to save as much viable heart muscle as possible and to prevent further complications, hence the phrase . Nitroglycerin (administered under the tongue or intravenously) may be administered to improve the blood supply to the heart. Thrombolysis agents include streptokinase, reteplase, alteplase, and tenecteplase. If no contraindications are present (such as a high risk of bleeding), thrombolysis can be given in the pre- hospital or in- hospital setting. When given to people suspected of having a STEMI within 6 hours of the onset of symptoms, thrombolytic drugs save the life of 1 in 4. The risks were major bleeding (1 in 1. However, 1 in 2. 00 people were prevented from a repeat heart attack, and another 1 in 2. Additionally, for 1 in 9. Furthermore, those with cardiac arrest, and ST elevation at any time, should usually have angiography. The scenario is referred to as . In the meantime, the calculated risk of further cardiovascular events (e. They do however increase the risk of bleeding and decrease the risk of further cardiovascular problems. The authors thus concluded that their routine use prior to PCI is of questionable value. It should start soon after discharge from the hospital. The program may include lifestyle advice, exercise, social support, as well as recommendations about driving, flying, sport participation, stress management, and sexual intercourse. This includes the adoption of a Mediterranean- type diet, maintaining alcohol intake within recommended limits, exercising to the point of mild breathlessness for 2. Those who cannot tolerate ACE inhibitors may be treated with an angiotensin II receptor antagonist. The general consensus is that statins have the ability to stabilize plaques and multiple other (. One study found 0. There are TIMI (Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction) scores for unstable angina or NSTEMI. Both scores have been found effective and reliable in multiple settings, including the emergency room. Complications. Acute complications may include heart failure if the damaged heart is no longer able to pump blood adequately around the body; aneurysm of the left ventricle myocardium; ventricular septal rupture or free wall rupture; mitral regurgitation, in particular if the infarction causes dysfunction of the papillary muscle; Dressler's syndrome; and abnormal heart rhythms, such as ventricular fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, and heart block. Longer- term complications include heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and an increased risk of a second MI. The World Health Organization estimated in 2. For example, in India, IHD had become the leading cause of death by 2. IHD were expected to double during 1. This can create coverage issues in the administration of no- fault insurance schemes such as workers' compensation. In general, a heart attack is not covered.
